Who is eligible for the program?

This program is open to high school students, college students, and industry professionals. International applicants are welcome. For the Fundamental AI Research track (LLM research), applicants must have successfully completed or self-studied at least one introductory programming course to be eligible for consideration. The Applied AI Research track has no programming prerequisite.

How likely is it that I get off the waitlist?

The likelihood of getting off the waitlist varies each cohort based on the availability of spots. We appreciate your patience and encourage you to explore future opportunities with us.

How selective are the need-based and merit-based scholarships?

Accepted Answer

Our need-based scholarships are awarded based on a holistic review of each applicant's qualifications, passion for AI research, and financial need. We anticipate the need-based scholarships will be highly competitive. Our merit-based scholarships are highly competitive. For reference, past recipients have impressive credentials such as gold medals at the International Physics Olympiad, research publications in algebraic topology, and advanced computer architecture projects. Note that while these achievements are indicative of the caliber we look for, they are neither necessary nor sufficient criteria for the scholarship.

How selective is the program?

If you have an interest in AI and a basic foundation in programming, we encourage you to apply! Due to limited spots and a high volume of applications, our program may be selective. Our primary objective is educational, and selectivity is only based on cohort size and the prerequisites needed for successful participation. We value programming experience and a rigorous academic record in mathematics and science. Experience with AI and any prior research experience can bolster your application. Additionally, we value a demonstrated passion for technology and AI through tangible projects or initiatives.

I have a schedule conflict. Can I still enroll in the program?

Yes, no worries - all classes are recorded. We will send you the materials for those days so you can study them on your own time and not miss out on any of the content. You can also email our instructors any questions you may have on the content. Please let us know in advance if possible and we can work with you to keep you up to speed.

What are the two research tracks, and which one should I pick?

Fundamental AI Research covers work on the models themselves: interpretability, agents, alignment and safety, evaluation and benchmarks, multimodal models, and reasoning. Applied AI Research points the same methods at another discipline: medicine and biology, economics, finance, physics, humanities and social sciences, or policy and governance. Both run the same twelve weeks with the same mentors and the same publication pipeline; the track only decides what your team's question is about. Pick the one whose problems you already care about.

Do I choose my track when I apply?

No. One application covers both tracks. You indicate a preference on the form, and you pick your field or area at the start of the program once you have talked it through with the team.

Does the applied track publish at the same venues?

Accepted Answer

Applied teams target their field's venues in addition to the AI workshop tracks every Algoverse team aims at. A medical project can go to a clinical venue and a NeurIPS workshop; the mentor helps pick the venue map in the first weeks.

What is AI vs ML vs NLP? What are LLMs?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the broad discipline centered on developing methods to emulate human intelligence. Machine Learning (ML) is a subfield of AI utilizing statistical techniques to learn from data. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the subfield of AI that focuses on the understanding and generation of human language, and has substantial intersection with ML. Large Language Models (LLMs) are advanced models designed to produce human-like language responses and understanding, such as answering questions. Since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, OpenAI's prominent LLM with over 100 million users, LLMs have become focal point in NLP research and AI/ML research more broadly.

Do I need experience with any programming or AI?

No programming experience is required for the Applied AI Research track. For the Fundamental AI Research track (LLM research), our work will be in Python, but you do not need Python experience as long as you have programmed in another language (e.g Java). Learning Python as a second language is straightforward; we will send you some resources to pre-study Python before the program if necessary. Experience with AI will help your application, but is not necessary. We will teach the high-level AI fundamentals necessary for our research program and dive deep into language models and NLP more broadly.

Who will I be teamed with?

Research teams are formed by education level and research interest. Industry professionals are only teamed with other industry professionals, college students with other college students, and high school students with other high school students. Within each level, we group students by the research area they want to work in. You do not need to arrive with a team or a topic.

How will this program help my college application or future career prospects?

While our main objective is educational, the skills, accomplishments, and publications you achieve here are highly regarded in academic circles and can indeed strengthen your college application or resume. This is especially true if your research is admitted to a top conference — a prestigious feat even for professional researchers. Our students have leveraged their Algoverse experience into tangible opportunities, including research positions at the University of Michigan's SLED Lab, admissions to Stanford University, research internships at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and UCLA, citations by Microsoft, Oxford, and UW, acceptances to NeurIPS and EMNLP workshops, and industry roles at Apple, Scale AI, Adobe, and more. Our NeurIPS-accepted high-school alumni have been admitted to Stanford, Berkeley EECS, Carnegie Mellon, Brown, Cornell, UIUC, Purdue, Toronto, and more.

What distinguishes Algoverse from other research programs?

Algoverse is unlike any other research program; we are the only program in the space that is committed to authentic, impactful research in the AI research community. While a few other research programs also have mentors from top institutions, they are known to simply do literature reviews or introductory projects without any novelty. Additionally, our students have reported that the hands-on guidance they received from our experienced mentors greatly surpasses what is available in other programs. We are heavily invested in our students' projects. This mentorship is crucial in helping students navigate complex AI research concepts and methodologies. Despite providing unparalleled opportunities in advanced AI research and mentorship, we charge a fraction of the price of other programs. We are not in it for the money - we are driven by a passion for educating the next generation of AI researchers.

What are conferences in AI research?

Conferences are gatherings where admitted researchers present and discuss their recent research findings. In AI research, unlike many other engineering disciplines where journals are the primary publication venues, researchers submit their findings to conferences. This is because the field evolves rapidly, and conferences provide a timely platform for presenting and discussing cutting-edge research. In ML research, the top-tier conferences are NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, and AAAI. For NLP research, the top-tier conferences are ACL, NAACL, and EMNLP. Researchers also frequently publish their papers on arXiv, an open-access repository that hosts preprints before they undergo peer review. Understanding the difference between these top-tier conferences and other lesser-known meetings is crucial. Respected AI researchers submit their papers exclusively to reputable conferences, which are recognized for their contribution to advancing the field. Note: If your research is accepted to a conference and you would like to attend in-person, we will try to sponsor a portion of the travel costs if the travel cost is prohibitive to you.

Can I submit this research project to science fairs and competitions?

Yes, as long as you follow all the rules and regulations of the science fair. Please contact us if you intend on submitting the research project to a science fair.

Question 17

I'm in a timezone where the lecture time is difficult. Can I still participate?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we will record all of the lectures, so you can follow along without attending the lecture synchronously. In the Fall, we have had students from every continent except Antarctica. Our students from East Asia and South Asia followed along with the lecture recordings. It is critical that you keep up to pace and update your research mentor regularly. The mid-week check-in is required to attend synchronously, but you'll be able to schedule it at a reasonable time based on your timezone.

What is the time commitment for this program?

The program is expected to be 5-10 hours per week, with flexibility for further exploration.

Question 19

Are students guaranteed a paper submitted to a conference?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Students who stay in good standing with their mentor are guaranteed a completed research paper that can be submitted to an appropriate conference or workshop. Good standing means consistent attendance, active participation, and completing the work assigned by the mentor.

If a student falls behind, we'll flag the issue and work with them to get back on track. Students only risk losing good standing after receiving more than three attendance flags or more than three contribution flags. Attendance flags relate to missed meetings, while contribution flags relate to lack of communication, limited participation, and failure to complete essential project work.

Question 20

How does authorship work on student papers?

Accepted Answer

Students are the lead authors on their papers, listed in order of contribution. Including Algoverse in the authorship is entirely optional and left to each team's discretion.

Can students switch teams if their team isn't the right fit?

Yes. We facilitate team swaps whenever they're needed. Program directors maintain visibility across every project and are committed to making sure each team succeeds.
