- ✓PI escalation for tough scientific questions.
- ✓Paid hourly position with publication stipends.
Our selection process
Mentors are vetted, trained, and supported throughout the cycle.
We treat mentor selection with the same care as our research review. Every mentor completes a structured interview and onboarding before they ever meet a team.
01
Application review
We review every application within a week. Strong applicants are invited to a 30-minute interview with the program director.
02
Interview
A conversation about your research background, mentoring philosophy, and a brief discussion of a sample student project.
03
Onboarding and training
Selected mentors receive our mentor guide, attend onboarding sessions, and are paired with a PI before the cycle begins.
04
Ongoing PI oversight
Weekly check-ins with program staff and direct PI escalation throughout the 12-week research cycle.

Frequently asked
What technical background should I have?+
We look for strong research judgment, clear technical communication, and project-management instincts. Mentors and PIs co-lead the science together, so deep subfield specialization is a plus but not a requirement.
What is the time commitment?+
About three hours per week per team across a twelve-week research cycle. Fully remote and flexible.
Is the role paid?+
Yes. This is a paid hourly position with additional publication stipends. Specifics are discussed during the interview.
Who do I report to?+
You work directly with a PI and Algoverse program staff. Weekly check-ins keep you supported throughout the cycle.
Can I join as a PI instead of a mentor?+
Yes. PhDs and industry researchers often join as PIs overseeing multiple teams in a professor-style role. Note that in the application form.
