Vivek Verma
Principal Investigator
Vivek Verma is a researcher at OpenAI on the post-training team, working on reinforcement learning, function calling, and other efforts. He graduated from UC Berkeley.
His research areas include Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Computational Linguistics. Notable publications include Ghostbuster, a state-of-the-art system for detecting AI-generated text that works by passing documents through weaker language models and training a classifier to predict AI-generated content.
He also created gg-bench, a collection of game environments designed to evaluate general reasoning capabilities in language models. Unlike static benchmarks, gg-bench generates new evaluation instances using LLMs to create natural language descriptions of novel games.
Vivek creates educational YouTube content on his channel vcubingx, where he visualizes deep learning concepts. Outside of research, he enjoys playing badminton and solving Rubik's cubes.

The application takes 10 minutes and is reviewed on a rolling basis. We look for strong technical signal—projects, coursework, or competition results—and a genuine curiosity to do real research.
If admitted, you will join a structured pipeline with direct mentorship to take your work from ideation to top conference submission at venues like NeurIPS, ACL, and EMNLP.
