More Words from Our Alumni

"My primary research project focused on analyzing and mitigating skin-tone bias in skin disease recognition and large language models. Thanks to my amazing mentor, Ben, & the program director, Kevin, the learning process for researching & developing my projects was taxing but never burdensome. Mentors will go out of their way to support your academic & career aspirations, even if not necessarily related to the active research project. Before Algoverse, I knew nothing about AI development. Now, I feel fully comfortable developing & training AI models. Additionally, I had no prior research experience. I feel more comfortable with academic writing & applying standard scientific methodology for research. Both of these skills are highly relevant to my goals in pursuing doctoral studies & they’ve also helped me solidify my particular research interests. The focus of the program is gaining an authorship & research paper but I feel that I found most career value when speaking to the amazing team behind the program. There is a wealth of knowledge here and everyone is super helpful!

Ryan Bui, Junior, Applied Mathematics at UC Irvine

"Our project demonstrated the potential for AI-based computer vision techniques to automatically analyze group dynamics from operating room videos. We experienced delays with data collection/annotation/preprocessing, as well as some hardware issues, but together we were able to work through all of our blockers and submit our abstract to ACS Clinical Congress 2025! I have had a great experience these past few months working with my team and my mentor, Benjamin Liu. Everyone was super passionate about the project, and I am glad we got to see it through. Ben was a great mentor, helping us with our blockers while also giving us the opportunity to learn and make our own contributions to the project. We’ve had such a great experience, that the team has agreed to continue building on our work to push for a journal submission! We are very excited to continue our work, and I cannot wait to see what is next for us. Being part of this Algoverse cohort has allowed me to continue working toward my goal of contributing to real-world applications of machine learning/AI in medical/healthcare contexts. I feel proud knowing I contributed greatly to a strong submission to ACS. My favorite part of the program was finally getting our project over the line and submitting it in time! This project took a few months, so to see our hard work pay off was relieving and satisfying.

James Ignacio, Computer Science at Fordham University Lincoln Center

"As a freshman in data science, I wanted to get into both AI/ML in general and also research. I wanted to learn as much as possible, but as a first year it was hard to get many opportunities so I joined Algoverse to get experience and knowledge! In my research project, we are using deep learning methods to do group surgery video analysis. I've learned so much about the research timeline and collaboration. My team is great, fortunately we are all active and working together. Our mentor is also really good! He sets a good example for us to follow as a researcher and he's also very knowledgeable. Algoverse has given me a good start in AI research. I now know a lot of the concepts that come with doing research in this sort of field and I understand the timeline and what an entire ML/AI project could look like. It's also a good project that I bring up in interviews!

Philip Chen, Freshman, Data Science at University of California, San Diego

"Prior to Algoverse, I've mostly dabbled in web development. With the rise of AI in recent years, I wanted to educate myself on the topic and be able to incorporate it in my work to ride along with the changes in the tech world. I've always been curious about how our brains, our intelligence come together, so the topic of recreating interests me very much. I joined Algoverse because I wanted to challenge myself, in terms of learning, working with strangers, and conducting formal research, which I was new to. What you get at Algoverse here that you cannot on your own, is a team of experienced mentors that are dedicated to assisting you. Our team successfully put in two separate submissions to ACS Clinical Congress. They're all equally as determined and passionate about the work as I am, if not more. Our project has given me many chances to push beyond my comfort zone, learn new things, work in a more professional setting, and learn from my mentor and peers. Beyond technical skills and soft skills, my mentor was able to provide solid advice and support regarding topics not directly related to Algoverse, such as personal time management and managing stress which I've been having trouble with. Overall, I'm very grateful that I was able to meet these amazing people in pursuit of our research project.

Leia Chen, Sophomore, Computer Science at University of British Columbia

"I was looking to get ahead in my freshman year and dive deep into a field that I could make a career out of. Our topic was about improving long context performance by inserting pause tokens into context, aiming to redistribute attention across the entire context. Working with my team was great, everyone was eager to learn and do their work and the mentors were available everyday to answer our questions and give feedback. I think this experience has definitely helped jumpstart my career. Looking for summer internships and getting interviews was much easier with research on my resume. Also, Algoverse taught me to read academic papers, making it easier to keep up with the latest advancements. My favourite moment was on the day of the submission to NAACL SRW. We weren't entirely finished with our paper and it was due at 7:00 AM. To submit the paper on time, my mentor (Yicheng) and I pulled an all-nighter and stayed on a call until we submitted. One piece of advice I have for others is to start your work early, even if the deadline is a month out, there will always be roadblocks that you don't expect.

James Begin, Freshman, Computer Science at University of Waterloo

"I'm a college student majoring in Computer Science, and I've been coding since the start of high school. While I've worked with AI through classes and a prior research internship, I joined Algoverse so I could work through a full research project from start to finish while contributing to all parts of the process. To come up with a research idea, my team and I did deep reads of several LLM-related research papers, and we identified a gap in terms of lightweight solutions to the lost-in-the-middle problem. The Algoverse team, including our team mentor and the program administrators, created a great working environment where we could ask questions and learn about our topic in detail. I especially appreciated the quick feedback and advice from the mentors throughout the process, particularly when there was a specific code-related issue blocking our progress. Ultimately, our paper was accepted to the 2025 NAACL SRW, making the project a success. After this experience, I feel confident in my ability to work with AI and complete research projects successfully.

Namit A., College Student

"Before the program I had a pretty strong CS background but no AI experience at all. I joined Algoverse because it seemed like a great opportunity to get some real research experience in AI and ML. My research project was about the effects of noise in chest X-rays on CNN/Transformer architecture diagnosis and segmentation accuracy. Our mentor was amazing and helped us set up the lightning loop and get all the crazy errors we ran into sorted out, without him we truly couldn't have even gotten our project off the ground, we wouldn't know where to begin with the first error. Algoverse has helped me foster a strong work ethic, communicate more effectively in a group setting, and gain stronger time management skills. I've learned an unbelievable amount about ML libraries such as PyTorch and TensorFlow. My favorite moment from the program is working late at night together on assignments, bonding and chatting about the project, and getting to know each other. A lot of our team members share very similar interests, and we plan to stay in touch after our cohort ends. The friendships I've made throughout Algoverse are truly one of a kind, and I'm super grateful to have been in this program and met so many passionate, like-minded individuals.

Derek Jiu, Grade 12

"Algoverse AI Research Program was AWESOME! The flow of the program from learning about the basics of LLM to critically thinking a real research idea and then implementing it was the most impressive part of the research program. The level of one-to-one support provided by mentors during the entire program was something I felt special about. It's an absolute 10/10 experience."

Yubraj P., Grade 12, Global College International

"The AI Research program taught me so many valuable skills about large language models, conducting research, and writing and developing papers that I know will be super useful in college. At the beginning of the semester, I never thought I had the capabilities to do high level research since it seemed so over my head at the time. But Kevin and Sean were there to help our group, answer questions at pretty much any hour of the day, and offer expert guidance, advice, and mentorship that helped us produce tangible results! This was so much fun, thanks Kevin and Sean!"
